What is a text-based MUD?

A MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) is an online role-playing game you play through text. Instead of 3D graphics, the world is described in writing — rooms, creatures, items, and other players. You type commands like look, north, or attack goblin, and the game answers in prose.

Think of it as a living novel you share with other people in real time. Twisted Shadows is a free text-based MUD (sometimes people call these text MMOs) built in that tradition.

Graphical MMOs show the world with art and animation. A text MUD paints the world with words and relies on your imagination. The trade-off is often depth: combat techniques, crafting, kingdoms, ships, religion, and politics can be richer because everything is driven by commands and descriptions rather than clickable hotbars.

If you enjoyed reading game manuals, tabletop sessions, or old BBS door games, MUDs tend to feel familiar quickly.

Yes. Twisted Shadows is free. You only need a MUD client (or any telnet-capable program) and an internet connection. There is no purchase required to create a character and explore the world.

Most players use a dedicated MUD client such as MUSHclient (Windows) or Mudlet (Windows and Mac). These make text easier to read and support aliases, triggers, and better logging than a raw terminal.

You can connect with a basic telnet client, but a MUD client is strongly recommended for comfort.

You create a character, pick a class, and explore a continent-scale world of rooms — jungles, deserts, seas, dungeons, and more. You can fight monsters, craft gear, tame beasts, sail ships, join guilds and Orders, raise armies, and contest castles with other players.

Yes. Twisted Shadows is multiplayer. Party up for dungeons, chat in-game, join guilds, form kingdoms, and fight alongside — or against — other players. Many newcomers learn fastest by asking questions in-game and on Discord.

You only need a few commands at first: movement (north, south, east, west), look, inventory-related commands, and help. Start slow — look around, walk between rooms, and type help when you are stuck. MUD communities are used to welcoming new players.
